Erectile dysfunction, commonly known as ED, refers to the inability to attain and maintain an erection appropriate for sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is not regarded normal for any age group and is different from the other problems that hinder sexual intercourse, like problems with orgasm and ejaculation or lack of sexual desire. As per National Institutes of Health, around 5 % of men aged 40 and above and between 15 and 25 % of men aged 65 and above experience Erectile dysfunction on long-term basis. Common reasons for erectile dysfunction are nerve diseases, diseases that affect the blood flow like atherosclerosis (it is hardening of the arteries), psychological factors, like depression, stress, performance anxiety and injury to the penis. Certain medications, chronic illness and a disease known as Peyronie's disease can also lead to erectile dysfunction.
ED treatment
There are many various ways of treating erectile dysfunction like surgery, sex therapy, suppositories, oral medications, penile injections and vacuum pumps. Each of these treatments has its own positives and side effects.

ED treatment drugs
The various drugs which can be used for ED treatment are Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra (chemical name: vardenafil hydrochloride) and Viagra (sildenafil). These drugs belong to a category of medicines known as phosphodiesterase inhibitors. They work by increasing the effect of NO or nitric oxide (it is the chemical which relaxes muscles in the erectile procedure of the penis). They also help in preventing the breakdown of nitric oxide, thus letting it to continue its effect of enhancing blood flow in the penis. The recommended starting dosage of Viagra is 50 mg, although 25 or 100 mg may also be required. The recommended starting dosage of Cialis and Levitra is 10 mg, though it may be adjusted to 20 mg or 5 mg according to the requirement. Testosterone is also known to effectively reduce ED in a lot of men who have low levels of their own testosterone. Some men claim to have benefitted from oral drugs like yohimbine hydrochloride as part of their ED treatment.
