The sun is the center of our solar system. Without it most life on earth would cease to exist. There is nothing like the sunshine on a warm summer day. The mere presence of the sun can lighten your mood and its absence especially during winter can lead many down the path to depression. The sun means so much to our daily lives, when we get up, how we plan our day, and when it’s time to sleep. With all that importance placed on the sun many forget or don’t consider the harmful effects the sun’s UV radiation can cause. When most people are outside in the sunshine they are not worried about being exposed to UV rays. Ultraviolet radiation can cause sunburn, skin cancer, and accelerate the aging of the skin. If you are going to be exposed to the sun for more than a short period of time you’d be wise to take steps to protect yourself.
One of the best ways to get protected is to stay covered and wear sun protective clothing. This clothing is made to block UV rays from penetrating its fabric. Most clothing blocks a small percentage of UV radiation but sun protective clothing can stop up to 98 percent.
This provides your skin with the protection it needs to avoid sunburns and more serious problems like skin cancer that can develop over time. All sun protective clothing carries an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating which measures how much UV is blocked. Most clothing has a rating of 15, 30, or 50, with the higher ratings providing the most protection. There are many popular clothing manufacturers making sun protective clothing. Most surfing and watersports companies have shirts and hats that have a UPF rating. Surfer rash guards are a very popular form of sun protective clothing that is made to be worn while swimming or dry.
Making sure you stay protected and out of the sun can be beneficial to your health and possibly allow you to live a longer life. You don’t need to stay out of the sun completely but limit your exposure and when you are out in the sun be sure to use precautionary measures such as wearing sun protective clothing. As you age and the threat of skin cancer increases you’ll be glad you decided to stay out of the sun.
