A more complex version of rummy known as Rummy 500 is favored among rummy enthusiasts for which more strategic planning is required. One distinctive feature of this version is that players are allowed to draw more than the up card from the discard heap. Some rules have been imposed in playing the rummy 500 game, which is applicable to the online version as well. Other names for this rummy game include Pinochle Rummy, Persian Rummy, 500 Rummy, 500 Rum, etc.
According to rummu 500 rules, each time a person leaves the table, points are allotted for all the cards that are melded, and points are taken away for all those cards that are not melded. The numbers of players allowed are 5 per deck of cards, which includes 54 cards and two jokers. If the count exceeds 5, 2 decks have to be used, which would include 108 cards in total. The main objective of the game is to score 500 points and the one who reaches the score first wins the game. In case the number of players is 2, 13 cards will be dealt out. On the other hand, if there are more than five players, then seven cards will be dealt out.
How do you play rummy 500? Suppose the game is played with five players, then seven cards will be dealt out to each player, and the first step will be to flip over one of the cards in order to start the discard pile. Next, place the stock pile as well as the discard pile cards on the center of the table, so that all the players may access them.
After providing sufficient time for the players to organize their cards, the game starts off with the player to the left of the dealer playing first, with subsequent turns being passed round the players in a clockwise direction.
The game cannot be played without learning the various sequences that are part of it. They are actually the same in normal card games, i.e. three of a kind, three consecutive, etc. Another major rummy strategy is to build up on other players’ sequences, which is known as ‘playing off’. The end of the game is announced when the first player discards his final card. Scores are then counted in order to determine the winner.
In order to play rummy 500, a player has to get acquainted with rummy 500 strategies, such as picking up a large heap of cards from the discard pile in order to form melds and sequences. However, he should try to get out fast enough so that all these cards do not work against him. Another popular strategy is not to use the Ace, unless they are worth triple the points. This will get you to the target score of 500 pretty faster. Rummy 500 provides a great source of entertainment at drink parties, where people can, not only play, but also carry on pleasant conversation with each other around the table. The only factor to keep in mind, is that rummy 500 needs a little more of effort and concentration than the original rummy version.
