It will become very apparent to new players that gamblers have a language all their own. The preceding section listed some of the strange terms used inside casino walls. There is also a name for almost every type of bet that can be made on a table, regardless of the game. I will attempt to list them all here. I realize that they all have been mentioned in earlier parts of this manual, but I feel very strongly that they should be listed again, all in one common place, so that you need not search to find an answer to any problem that you might encounter in your future gaming experiences.

The following pages list the names and description of the bets available in all games in the casino.

Bets Available in Baccarat
Player hand
a bet that the hand called player will come closer to nine than the hand called banker. Payoff is one to one.

Banker hand
a bet that the hand called banker will come closer to nine than the hand called player. Payoff is one to one. There is, however, a 5 percent fee charged to all winning banker hands.

Tie
a bet that both the banker and player hands will tie. Payoff is eight to one. All bets on banker or player are considered a push in the event of a tie.

Regular hand
a bet that player will come closer than the dealer to 21, without going over that count. Payoff is one to one.

Down for double
the option to increase one’s bet, up to twice its original amount, and then only draw one additional card. Payoff is one to one, but new bet is greater than the original bet.

Split
the option to separate a pair into two new hands. After split is made, the game becomes a regular game, as indicated above.

Insurance
the option to bet that the dealer has Blackjack and will definitely win. Can only be for half the original bet, but payoff is two to one.

Blackjack
the best possible hand. Can only be made with a perfect count of 21 in only two cards. Payoff is three to two.

Surrender
the option to relinquish half the player’s bet before proceeding with the game. Can only be done prior to taking cards.
