“Follow the shoe” this means bet on whichever side is winning at the time, player or banker. Most casinos will explain in English on the layout where to bet on the player or banker.
When you sit down, your first bet would be on the side that won the previous hand. For example, if the banker won the last hand, you would stick with the bank until it loses. Then you would switch to the player’s side. Keep betting on the player’s side until it loses, then switch back to the bank.
Bettors around the table take turns at being the banker. Each time the banker loses, the shoe is moved to the next bettor and he officially becomes the banker. But just because you are officially the banker, you still can bet on the player’s side. You are the banker in title only. If the player’s side won the last five hands, it would be foolish to switch your bet to the banker just because you now have the shoe. In baccarat, cards can run in lengthy winning or losing streaks for one side or the other. For centuries, mathematicians have been trying to figure why cards and dice fall the way they do. It is not uncommon for the player’s or banker’s side to win six or seven hands in a row. By following the shoe, you have eliminated the guesswork and have a chance to catch a winning streak. This is how you should play baccarat and its identical twin, punto banco, anywhere in the world.

Most foreign casinos use six decks for baccarat and punto banco. In Las Vegas they use eight decks. In an eight-deck shoe, there are between eighty-five and ninety decision hands dealt in which somebody wins or loses, not counting ties. It takes between thirty arid forty-five minutes to deal an average eight-decker; but the more big bettors, the longer it takes, sometimes up to ninety minutes. Still at roughly eighty hands or more an hour, a gambler, whether he’s betting $5 or $2,000, can win or lose a bundle before the ice melts in his drink.
Baccarat players usually don’t leave until the shoe is played out and resbuffled. That’s why they run up such high losses and wins. In craps, winners usually walk away from the table when the shooter finally misses out (throws a 7 loser). In 21, players who have been on a winning streak often will leave a table when the dealer pauses to reshuffle. But in baccarat, the reshuffling break may happen only once every hour. Often players sit there shoving out their money as if they were hypnotized, hoping the shoe will turn in their favor and make them rich.
It can happen. Anyone who hangs around a baccarat game knows that small fortunes are won and lost every day. In 1972, I witnessed one of the longest and largest winning streaks in gaming history.
