A form of punishment for those who break laws, community service is not for everyone. Community service often involves going out of one’s comfort zone, and involving oneself with complete strangers. It can be very awkward at times. Even with these downsides, community service is something that everyone should at least try once.

Community service is a great way to become connected with your community. I personally have learned a lot about my community through community service projects. It is important to know about your community so you can understand it better. You will start to understand where your neighbors are coming from. After you try out some sort of community service you might find you enjoy it and want to continue. Self satisfaction is a given. Maybe though, you are someone who doesn’t enjoy or find value in community service, this is not a bad thing either.

By having at least tried community service, you know what you are missing. You will know that it is not for you, as opposed to just assuming that it isn’t for you.

Community service works best when you are doing something that you have natural talent towards or hold interest in. This way, the community benefits from your expertise and you are doing something that you do not hate. For me, it was computer work. This allowed me to work from home, having to only meet with anyone else a few times, and over email several times. This kind of community service is practically designed for introverted individuals like myself.

If community service is or is not for you, you will have learned something about yourself. And that, is all that really matters.
