There are a huge number of domino game variations. One of the factors that differentiate domino variations from one another is the method by which they are scored. Block domino games are scored at the end of each round and point domino games are scored as the round progresses. However, even all block domino games and all point domino games are not scored in the same fashion.
Block Domino game can be scored in several ways. The most common is that when a round ends each player earns a score equal to the number of points remaining on the tiles remaining in his or her hand. The player with the least number of points, or the player that has run out of tiles, earns a score equal to his own points subtracted the sum of all of the other players’ tiles. The player to reach a predetermined score over the course of several rounds (for instance, 100) is the winner of the game. Therefore, it is best to run out of tiles first or have the lowest count in order to earn the most points. Domino variations that are scored this way include Block Dominoes, Cyprus, Fortress, Matador and other popular block games.

Other domino games determine the winner by the player who has the lowest score at the end of a round, or over the course of rounds. In Chickenfoot, for instance, the player that runs out of tiles first earns a score of 0 and other players earn a score equal to the points in their hands. At the end of seven rounds, the player with the lowest score wins.
Point domino games are scored throughout the round. In All Fives and All Threes, for instance, players earn extra points for placing down combinations of tiles that add up to a sum of five or three, respectively. In Flower & Scorpion, players earn points for placing down tiles that match the value of the Flower and lost points for placing down tiles that match the value of the Scorpion. Other point domino variations include Bergen, Muggins and Sniff.
If you are new to a domino variation, it is important to learn how the game is scored. In this way, you can maximize or minimize your score as needed.
