Jon Cato is the biggest nerd in the editorial staff, and of course a respectable
collection of Star Trek episodes in their collection. When we recently had a
chance to ask some questions to Daniel Stahl, producer for the upcoming online
role-playing game Star Trek Online, he was not angry to pray.
Star Trek is available in various series all with different atmosphere,
timelines and focus. All of these have obviously affected the game, but the Star
Trek series has had the biggest impact?
- The original series had the most impact in that it set the tone and foundation
for Starfleets main mission. Although many of the stories in the game refers
directly to the newer series, it is sufficient to see the original series to
understand the game, because you are out on a journey and exploring new and
strange worlds. It is the essence of the game.
Games based on popular popkulturelle phenomena are often very creative locked
set, as in the first Star Wars game, which was solely based on places and people
from the movies, and little or nothing other content. How much freedom do you
have in relation to creating and expanding the world of sto credits ? Do you
have strict guidelines for what you can and can not do, or you can invent new
technology, aliens, spaceships and planets as you feel about yourself?
- Working with CBS has been fantastic in that way. The license gives us great
freedom to deliver us from the already existing content, and gives us the chance
to create and expand the universe for the story to life. In addition to the
already known, the players to see new spaceship, new uniforms and new aliens
that have been developed by Cryptic team. It is ultimately up to the fans to
accept these additions and calculate them as part of the Star Trek universe.
